We built this design system from the ground up, bringing with it UX best practices and modern design. Through telemetry and customer survey data, we restructured the information architecture, simplifying the user flow for the most common actions. Miva’s admin was transformed into a simple and intuitive experience, without dumbing down its capabilities and features.

Miva had long been considered a robust ecommerce platform, though its admin was not intuitive and often required hours of training and specialists to onboard. With the upcoming release of Version 10, we took this opportunity to adopt a UX-first approach in overhauling the software to bring significant ease of use while maintaining the powerful feature set the platform was known for.

Through telemetry, user feedback sessions, customer survey data, and competitive research, we identified the key pain points users were experiencing. We incorporated those pain points along with highly sought after features into our notes to form core design principles guiding the entire initiative.
After the initial discovery, we moved into storyboards and wireframe prototypes to achieve proof of concept of all the core functionality and UX. This included restructuring the information architecture, simplifying the user flow for the most common actions, and solving for key pain points such as the onboarding experience. We built the design system from the ground up, bringing with it UX best practices, accessibility, and modern UI elements. Once high-fidelity versions of the interfaces were created, we made a series of prototypes and presented them to our users in feedback sessions. We took our learnings and applied them directly into the product in preparation for launch.

Miva’s admin was transformed into a simple and intuitive experience, without dumbing down its capabilities and features. The navigation was converted from a complex 20+ item set to eight sections, housing all of the software’s features. The dashboard updated dynamically to allow users to jump right back into their last workflow, and featured customizable modules, which gave our merchants visibility into key metrics and reporting. Each page was vastly improved following our core principles that applied common UX patterns and reduced cognitive load.

Miva customers loved it! Since its release, our merchants as well as our internal teams, have saved significant training hours onboarding new users to the software. This update welcomed marketers to a platform once considered a developer’s tool through its ease of use and modern design. Third party integrators and partners raved about how great the experience is, even when compared with more expensive, resource-rich competitors. Additionally, this redesign contributed to record-breaking customer acquisition numbers in 2020 and 2021.
